He also mentioned community-based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) plan/programme as part of sensitization campaign on oil spill in host communities, appointment of the DG/CE as a Board Member of the Pollution Control Working Group (PCWG) of INTERPOL and maintaining of bilateral and multilateral relations with national and international agencies for proactive capacity and institutional building in oil spill management as part of the remarkable feats of the agency.
In his response, the Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Hon. Julius Pondi, explained that his committee would have paid a visit earlier if not because of its crowded schedule since inauguration last year.
The Chairman said the visit to NOSDRA was part of the Committee’s exercising of its oversight functions on Federal Ministry of Environment and its Departments and Agencies with a view to identifying constraints and challenges facing them and how to overcome them through fruitful discussions for effective and unfettered service delivery that will serve public interest.
Hon. Pondi noted that the success of NOSDRA would add value to the overall national interest, hence the familiarization visit of the House Committee on Environment to the agency to determine its human capacity and institutional building needs, as well as constraints and challenges, for improved performance.
While commending NOSDRA for its relentless commitment and determination to maintain its mandate in oil spill management in the country, he called on the agency to be free to draw the attention of his committee on any vital areas of need for assistance to enable it discharge its duties and obligations without any let or hindrance.
