SDN hands over environmental tools to NOSDRA.

The launching and handing over of the environmental monitoring tools: the oil spill monitor and the gas flare tracker from the Stakeholders Democratic Network (SDN) to National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) took place on Tuesday, 17th April, 2019 at Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja with representatives from Facility for Oil Sector Transparency and Reform (FOSTER) and the USAID present.

In his introductory remark, the Director General and Chief Executive of NOSDRA, Mr Musa Idris said the priority areas in the Agency are to ensure transparency in oil spill reporting and to keep hope alive. He added that the initiative for the project began in 2014 when the need arose to bring oil spill associated problems to light. He said staff from NOSDRA have been sent on a training and on return, the gas tracker will be fully operational. He thanked the SDN for the role played in the establishment of the environment tools and assured them that NOSDRA will put the tools into proper use, adding that the Agency will interact with oil companies to make sure that oil spillages are handled properly and to ensure these companies all have oil spill units. He specially thanked the Country Director of SDN, Dr Christopher Onosode for making this possible.

In a presentation on the oil spill monitor and Gas Flare tracker made by... who has been working on the technical aspects of these environmental tools in collaboration with NOSDRA, he explained that the oil spill monitor operates by visualising latest oil spill data on a system which includes statistics of oil spill records, locations, companies involved, companies' spill records, areas or habitat affected by oil spills. He further explained that the gas flare tracker uses data in representing information; scans the globe and detects all kinds of fire burning and gas release, takes measurements of high intensity burning in Nigeria and identifies what kind of gas is released. He added that the system is regularly updated with gas flare statistics and volumes by individual sizes in different locations. He said he hopes the system is very useful in identifying gas flare, saying the tracker is already working in all gas fields at the moment.

After the presentation, there was an official handover of the oil spill monitor and Gas flare tracker by Dr. Christopher on behalf of SDN to the DG of NOSDRA. He said they hope the Agency will use the tools effectively and wished them all the best adding that SDN will be available to provide further technical support if the need arises.
